Britton Knight's name was on a list of inhabitants of Alachua County which was enclosed in a letter from James Dell to Daniel E. Burch in July 1826:
"We the Inhabitants of Alachua County hereunto Signers, feeling a strong interest
in the Government road about to be opened from Wanton's to Coleraine on St.Mary's River, understanding the same was under your direction beg to leave to represent to you, that it is our opinions that the route along the old Alachua Trail crossing the Santaffy and Alligator at the present fords, thence along said Trail to the Trail turning to Black Creek, thence along said Trail to the ferry on said creek called Hagan's ferry. This route will greatly accommodate the Inhabitants of this County, as also most of the Settlers of Black Creek, whereas any route further East would be of no earthly use to any of the Settlers of
this County , or few on Black.

Memorial to the Secretary of War By Inhabitants of Alachua County.
"Alachua County E. Florida 15th March 1829.
To the Hon: Secretary of War, Washington City.
Sir: The undersigned inhabitants of the County of Alachua, having heard that stron efforts
are making to prejudice the Government of the US against its agent for Indian affairs in this
territory. Col. G. Humphreys, & as we believe with a view to effect his removal from office, in
order that some interested aspirant may be benefited thereby & not with a single eye to the public good- the only motive which the undersigned conceive could justify an attempt like that under consideration against a public officer - beg leave to state that an acquaintance of many years with Col Humphreys during the time he has been in the discharge of the duties as Indian Agent, has enabled us to form a correct estimate of the principles which has governed him in the discharge of those duties. Some of us have narrowly scrutinized his conduct in relation to our Indian intercourse because we had heard his policy condemned and his motives aspersed and we find it incumbent upon us to say after such scrutiny; that however we may have been at times disposed to censure his proceedings, are nevertheless satisfied his course has been correct and his policy in the management of our Indian relations judicious, and based upon justice, and having a tendency to place their relations upon a footing of permanent friendship; Under these circumstances we cannot, but anticipate his removal as an evil to be depreciated and therefore beg leave respectfully to request that it may not take place. We have good reason to believe that if the services of Col: Humphreys in his present capacity are continued, the final emigration of the Seminole Indians out of our territory (an event so much to be desired by the Inhabitants of this County, Most of whom reside in the immediate vicinity of the Indians) may in a short time be effected. We know that his influence with the Indians has been already to a considerable extent successfully exercised upon that subject and it is confidently supposed by us, that if suitable encouragement is given to his effort, they will eventually lead to a perfect
accomplishment of this all important object. The undersigned do not intend to place themselves in the light of champions of Col. Humphreys and must not be so considered, as we are actuated in making this commumication solely with a desire to further the cause of Justice and promote the public good.

In a Petition to the President and Congress by Citizens of the Territory dated December 1, 1842, (NA:HF, 27 Cong., 3 sess.:DS) Lloyd E. Dillon was the first signer of 61 men from settlements in what is now Hernando and Citrus Counties. The petition states that the signers moved in March 1842, "from the populated portions of Georgia and Florida" to settle in "Indian Country south of the Withlacoochee River" at the inducement of an order issued by the "then Col. Worth, United States Military Commander in Florida" which promised a "donation of lands--protection of the United States Troops for a time--and subsitance (sic) for one year or more." The petitioners said they had not received any protection or subsistence and were faced with the "dismal prospect of starvation." They were asking for a granting of a "continuation of subsistence" so that they could "Garner one crop."
The petition is signed at Chuccochattee.
E. J. Knight is the second signer. He was Lloyd Dillon's brother-in-law.
The Full Petition can be read in the Florida Territorial Papers, 1842, pp. 575-576.
E. J. Knight was listed as a Benton County voter in the first Florida Statewide Election, Monday, March 26, 1845. He voted at Augusta Precinct and was one of three Election Inspectors. After his name on the voting list appears (MG) indicating Minister of the Gospel. See other details under Source

NOTE: Eliza was Jeptha's first wife. The George Knight on Line 23 was the brother of Elias and Britton Knight and could not have been 50 years old. He was born before 1792, making him at least 58. Britton had been Jeptha's guardian since childhood and George called Jeptha his "nephew" in his will. The Bates family had been neighbors in the 1840 census. Their relationship to the Knights is unknown.

The will itself is a two page document leaving George Knight's estate to be "held in trust by my nephew Jeptha Knight for the sole use and benefit of his six children." He then names them: David Levy Knight, George Montgomery Knight, Thomas Jasper Knight, Margaret Frances Knight, Julia Eliza Ann Knight, Lemuel Lafayette Knight.
George named Jeptha Knight as his Executor. The will is dated August 26, 1855.
Witnesses were Samuel Geiger. Jonathan Turner, and Andrew Robb, who added the title, "J. Peace in and for Alachua County."
The Will was filed in Alachua County Probate Court June 23, 1857. Witness Jonathan Turner swore that he had seen George Knight sign his 1955 will, and had seen Andrew Robb and Samuel Geiger sign it also as witnesses. Andrew Robb signed this document as "Judge of Probate, Alachua County."

In 1850 George Knight was living with his "nephew," Jeptha Knight and family. Jeptha had been made a ward of George's brother, Britton Knight, when Jeptha was a child. George wrote a will in 1855, saying he lived at Ft. Clark, leaving his property and cattle in trust for Jeptha's children. Jeptha was trustee.
George Knight was listed as an Alachua County voter in the first Florida Statewide Election, Monday, March 26, 1845. He was also one of three Election Inspectors at the Fort Clark Precinct. His nephew, Jeptha Knight, was listed as a voter there also. See details under Source.

"Petition to the President by Citizens of Alachua County
January 1832
To the President of the United States
The Subscribers Citizens of Alachua County Respectfully represent that the present
situation of the county and its inhabitants induce them to request that a Company of U.S. Troops may be ordered from Cantonment Brooke Tampa Bay or some other station to Camp King near the Seminole Indian Agency & to suggest as reasons therefore that there are a much larger proportion of slaves than white persons owned by the citizens within 30 miles of the Northern Boundary of the Seminole Indian Nation and more than 1600 Indian Warriors and 1100 slaves belonging to the Indians many of whom are traversing the County night and day.
That the two Companies stationed at Cantonment Brooke Tampa Bay are over 100
miles distant from the Seminole Agency & at too great a distance to render any assistance in case of emergency.
The subscribers would also respectfully suggest that the troops could not only be
advantageously employed in opening or repairing the roads passing through the lands of the United States but would be considered a great safeguard and protection to the
Citizens of the County thereby inducing many to prchase and settle on the public lands increasing the value of the land.
All of which is respectfully submitted

In a Petition to the President and Congress by Citizens of the Territory dated December 1, 1842, (NA:HF, 27 Cong., 3 sess.:DS) Loyd E.
He was Loyd Dillon's brother-in-law.
The Full Petition can be read in the Florida Territorial Papers, 1842, pp. 575-576
James BAKER and his family moved from Madison County, FL to what is now the
Brooksville, FL area in 1842 to claim lands under the Armed Occupation Act of
1842 described above. On 1 December 1842 James, A.A., J.B. (I.B.), J.W. and
Thaddeus L. BAKER signed a Petition To The President And Congress By Citizens Of
The Territory. E.J. KNIGHT, Azilpha's husband, also is listed as a signer of
this document. The document states that in March of 1842 Lieut. PATRICK held out
inducements to the citizens to occupy the Indian Country south of the
Withlacoochee River by the promise of a donation of lands. The settlers were
promised protection by the U.S. troops for a time and subsistence for one year
or more. Upon arrival in the area the settlers were offered no protection or
